A Little History

Before these barns were converted in to luxury holiday homes, they use to house cattle and store wheat - which would've been delivered to the local mill to go on to produce bread for the surrounding community. A lot of our hard work, dedication & local craftsmanship have gone into creating these glorious barns you see here today.

The Area

Happisburgh is home to the oldest working lighthouse in the county and the only independently operated lighthouse in the UK. Saved as a working light by the local community, it is maintained and operated entirely by voluntary contributions. The famous red and white striped lighthouse was built in 1790 and offers wonderful views of the coast and countryside. In the summer, it is open to visitors on occasional Sundays (check their website for opening times).

The secluded, sandy beach is dog friendly and great for days out. From the beach, you can walk as far as Sea Palling taking in wonderful views and there are miles of coastal paths to walk and footpaths in the surrounding area. Happisburgh is known for its coastal erosion which is constantly changing the landscape of the coastline. This erosion has lead to some discoveries that date back millions of years.

A warm welcome awaits you at Happisburgh church, whether you are living locally or on holiday here, and is open daily (check their website for dates, times & prices). St Mary’s church Happisburgh dominates the skyline and dates back to the 15th century. It’s 110ft tower, overlooks the sea and is an important landmark warning mariners of the nearby sandbanks.

People who wish to climb the 133 steps can enjoy the spectacular views of the coast and surrounding countryside. On a clear day you can see 30 churches, 2 lighthouses, 7 water towers, 5 corn mills, 5 drainage mills, 3 wind farms, Bacton gas terminal, reefs at Sea Palling and the Cathedral spire in Norwich (approx. 16.5 miles away).

Happisburgh itself is a pretty seaside village with a village shop and an excellent fresh fish shop. The constantly changing coastline, it’s 18th century lighthouse and 15th century church makes Happisburgh a fascinating place to stay & explore.
